Kites at Waddell Beach in Davenport, California

It might not be summer just yet, but warmer weather is just around the corner, and that means fun at the beach!

Though not as popular as traditional surfing—a sport that Santa Cruz is proudly world-famous for—windsurfing and kitesurfing are alternative sports enjoyed by many across the county. But before you get your gear together and set out onto the water, there are a few things to be aware of and consider.

Both windsurfing and kitesurfing have seen some dips in popularity over the years, as many choose to start with traditional surfing or other water activities. Additionally, Santa Cruz’s conditions are not always beginner-friendly—another reason why people might be reluctant to try, or take their board up north to gentler waters. Nevertheless, these sports have cultivated a tight-knit and passionate group of people, and for brave adventurers willing to try them out, Santa Cruz County has some great spots to experience the waves!

Best Places To Go

When it comes to windsurfing specifically, many would tell beginners that Santa Cruz proper (the area around the wharf and Pleasure Point) is an area much more suitable for surfers. Steamer Lane, right off of West Cliff Beach, is considered one of the must-try destinations for advanced surfers—but kitesurfers and windsurfers should be cautious!

Additionally, places around Santa Cruz can be fickle depending on the season and weather conditions (and the water can be quite cold!). Natural Bridges State Beach, for example, has been known for its vast amounts of kelp and high winds. This is not always ideal for windsurfing, though with the right conditions the area can be excellent for intermediate or advanced levels.

Waddell Beach

The premier destination for both kitesurfers and windsurfers, Waddell Beach is a top pick for its long stretch of beach (that makes it easier to launch), easier winds, and generally low levels of kelp. Often you’ll see a multitude of colorful kites out on the waves.

Waddell Beach is located off of the Cabrillo Highway in northern Davenport, just opposite the Rancho del Oso Nature and History Center (part of Big Basin Redwoods State Park). The beach offers parking and restrooms to guests.

Scott Creek Beach

Down the coast from Waddell Beach is Scott Creek Beach, sometimes known colloquially as “Scotts.” Once again, this area provides a good stretch of beach for those who cannot waterstart, or for those who just simply prefer to beachstart in general!

Scott Creek Beach is known for its waves and its medium winds, although these have the potential to reach quite high speeds. As a result, this area is a particular favorite of kitesurfers more than windsurfers. However, has very limited parking and no other amenities, so those who visit should come prepared!

Davenport Beach & Other Beaches

Davenport Beach is located south of Scott Creek Beach, also off of the highway. This area is more famous for its scenic views and rugged landscape, including famed Shark Fin Cove. Additionally, the winds can be iffy because of the sharp cliffs—though many swear by the water further out. Other beaches, such as Natural Bridges State Beach, are dependent on skill level, water and weather conditions, and other factors.

Where To Get Your Gear

Most of the shops in Santa Cruz are tailored towards surfing specifically, but many do carry the windsurfing and kitesurfing essentials: wetsuits, sunglasses, shoes/boots, and more. While it’s a bit more difficult to purchase suitable boards and kites, a lot of places offer repairs should these be needed. See the following locations for basic equipment:

  • O'Neill Surf Shop

  • Cowell's Beach Surf Shop

  • Freeline Surf Shop
