You’ve heard the saying, “April showers bring May flowers.” For Santa Cruz residents, however, the rain might just be getting to be a bit too much. Despite the weather recently, it’s always a great idea to get out and explore what the city has to offer.

This month, there are a multitude of outdoor—and indoor, for those really rainy days!—events being hosted in the downtown area, for a range of different interests. From cycling through the city to story time for kids, there’s so much happening this April in Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz Earth Day

April 22nd is officially Earth Day, an event that seeks to generate awareness regarding climate change, sustainability, energy, and more, usually culminating in an hour-long blackout. As this falls on a Monday this year, Santa Cruz is celebrating Earth Day the entire weekend, with a number of fun, family-friendly activities in the downtown area.

This year, this event is being held in Abbott Square, at the intersection of Cooper Street and Front Street, and is absolutely free, with no tickets required. Stop by between 11:30 AM and 4:00 PM for live music, a photobooth, local vendors, face painting, and even a kids fashion show. Kids who are participating in the Passport Program can also earn a small prize. More information about this event can be found here.

Independent Bookstore Day

Celebrated across the United States, Independent Bookstore Day is happening on April 27th at Bookshop Santa Cruz, one of the city’s most beloved landmark stores.

Independent Bookstore Day is a free family-friendly event, starting at 9:00 AM and running all day long. Complementary coffee is available on a first-come, first-serve basis with limited quantities, which might just be the pick-me-up you need before starting your workday. Bookshop Santa Cruz is also having a book sale, with certain perks for Readers’ Club members—including the chance to spin their prize wheel when making a purchase of $25 or more (or a specially-marked item).

Additionally, there is a scavenger hunt happening all day (one for adults, one for kids!) and a story time at 11:00 AM. More information about this event can be found here.

Santa Cruz Dance Week

The week of April 18th (on until April 25th) is Santa Cruz Dance Week. This free event takes place downtown each evening, starting at 5:15 PM, and features a range of dancers from crews, studios, and academies in a wide variety of dance styles. Some of the highlights include showcases of cultural dances from around the world, theater performances, and even acrobatics.

This is Santa Cruz Dance Week’s 15th anniversary. They also offer paid classes for interested dancers during the week of the event. More information about this event can be found here.

Upcoming Events For May

In addition to April events in Santa Cruz, there are also some cool things happening in the city at the beginning of May.

Race Through Time

An eccentric cycling or walking scavenger hunt, Race Through Time is happening May 4th across the Santa Cruz downtown. A team activity, participants are tasked with finding clues surrounding cultural and historic places in the city, hosted by the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History. Teams are encouraged to dress up in fun outfits, and there are prizes for the winners along with the best-dressed team. More information about this event can be found here.

Kids Day Festival

Also on May 4th is the Santa Cruz Kids Day Festival. This free, downtown event features live music, vendors, performances and activities, and discounts for kids in local shops. More information about this event can be found here.
