Rollercoaster at Santa Cruz Eeach Boardwalk, USA

With its safe neighborhoods, great schools, and beautiful scenery, it’s no wonder why many families are making the move to Santa Cruz County. Although this region is known particularly for its beaches and surfing opportunities, there’s so much more to see and do. From the classic attractions at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, to community events hosted at Aptos Village County Park, every day offers something new and exciting for area residents.

This weekend, consider taking the whole family out to enjoy what this gorgeous area has to offer. We’ve compiled a list of some of the popular child-friendly attractions (and some you might not know about!) around Santa Cruz County—for all ages!

Whale skeleton outside Seymour Marine Discover Center, Santa Cruz

Seymour Marine Discovery Center

100 McAllister Way, Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz has its fair share of museums, but the Seymour Marine Discovery Center in particular makes for a great afternoon with the kids! Its indoor and outdoor exhibits showcase a variety of marine life, and includes octopi, sharks, seals, and a giant blue whale skeleton: one of the largest in the world! There are also some hands-on exhibits, where kids have a chance to (gently!) interact with some sea creatures, such as starfish.

The museum hosts events and programs, including special exhibits, guest speakers, and summer camps (ages 9-14). Admission is $12 for adults, and $9 for kids aged 3-17. Toddlers can visit for free. Check out their website here

Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center

35 Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz

Located just steps away from the boardwalk is the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center. In contrast to the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, this museum has a number of interactive, technological exhibits and tons of things for the little ones to touch and crawl around in. It’s an educational experience that’s also super fun!

Admission is free, and the museum even offers a trolley service (weekends only) that picks up passengers from the downtown area for only 25 cents. Visit their website here.

Roaring Camp train car in Felton, CA

Roaring Camp: Redwood Forest Steam Train

5401 Graham Hill Road, Felton

Roaring Camp railroad is a beloved attraction for both area tourists and residents. There are two routes that are offered: one to and from the Santa Cruz Mountains and the boardwalk, and one winding up Bear Mountain. For adventurous kids, the latter is an excellent trip through the redwood forest, and the duration of the trip is about 75 minutes. At the destination, riders can get off the train and explore the area for a few minutes before making the journey back.

Roaring Camp also hosts events throughout the year, including an Easter Egg Hunt, which is a favorite for young kids. Tickets for adults (13 years and up) are $39.95 per person. For children (2-12), tickets are $24.95. Kids under 2 years old ride for free. Visit their website here.

The Santa Cruz Children’s Museum of Discovery

1855 41st Avenue #10, Capitola

This is a great museum for the little ones, as it features educational exhibits that also aid in development. This includes giant blocks that visitors are encouraged to play with, train sets, various sensory activities (with lights, textures, and sounds), things to climb on, and so much more. As exhibits are always being updated, there’s always something new to see.

Families love to spend an afternoon together here, and there are babies-only spaces as well. The museum, however, is only open from Wednesday to Saturday. Membership can be purchased, but tickets otherwise are $10 per person. Visit their website here.

The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park

Aptos Creek Road, Aptos

While there are many, many parks and beaches around Santa Cruz County, this one is (perhaps!) a bit more underrated. Found not too far north of Aptos, this is definitely one for the older kids—or, at least, those who are really adventurous.

The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park offers a multitude of walking/hiking trails that are easy to moderate in difficulty, as well as a select few biking and horse trails. While camping is not allowed, many who visit this gorgeous park love to have picnics here. Admission is per vehicle. Visit their website here.

Purple Shrub Aster at UC Santa Cruz Botanic Gardens, CA

UC Santa Cruz Arboretum & Botanic Garden

Arboretum Road, Santa Cruz

Part of University of California, Santa Cruz campus, this is a must-see for those of all ages. The arboretum is divided into sections based on area, with its Australian Garden and New Zealand Garden exhibits being the largest. View incredible plants, flowers, and wildlife in the warmer months, or join one of the tours offered.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 6-17, and free for those under 6. Open daily. Visit their website here.
