May 02. California Bookstore Day. This is the second year for this new annual California event and Bookshop Santa Cruz will be hosting a day of fun literary events, celebrations and creative minds. Enjoy coffee, special sale items, a DIY field guide workshop for kids, a Letters Lounge workshop for writers and a Literary Trivia Night starting at 7pm. May 10. Seymour Center's Mother's Day. Santa Cruz family activities this month include taking the kids for an exploration of awesome ocean mom's at the Seymour Marine Discover Center, at Long Marine Lab. You'll have a chance to find out how marine scientists work and soak up the views of Monterey Bay. In the Exhibit Hall you'll really be able to uncover the ocean research undertaken here. May 16. Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Season Kickoff! Our epic shoreside amusement park is gearing up to celebrate the start of the season. This is the state's oldest surviving park of its kind and on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk there's everything from games, treats, eateries, sand, sun, surf and endless rides. Enjoy free performances by Circus of Nations, taking place on the beach bandstand at 12pm, 3pm and 6pm. See more details at the Beach Boardwalk website.

May 23. 31st Annual Santa Cruz Longboard Club Invitational. This is going to be the 31st annual LongBoard Invitational, where these unique surfers from across California will gather to show-off their moves during the Memorial Day Santa Cruz events.

Taking over the famous surfing destination of Steamer Lane, located near West Cliff residential neighborhood by downtown, locals will have a great view of the action throughout the competition from Lighthouse Point Park. Enter a raffle, cheer on your favorite local longboarders and check out the booths of handcrafted art, locally-owned clothing and more. See the Santa Cruz Longboard Union website for more details.

May 23-24. Santa Cruz American Music Festival. Things to do in Santa Cruz during the month of May wraps up in style as some of the nation's powerhouse blues & country music performers come to town. Bonnie Raitt, Big & Rich, Ryan Bingham and many artists will be featured during the festival, taking place at Aptos Village Park, in the natural beauty of the Redwood amphitheater. Between acts browse the merch booths, enjoy food trucks with New Orleans-style appies to bbq and pizza, or take the kids to the face painting & balloon animal area.
