Modern, Art Deco-inspired living room in white

As we (desperately) wish for spring to arrive in beautiful Santa Cruz County, you may feel like your home needs a little bit of a refresh. Whether that means grabbing some new throw pillows or completely renovating your bathroom is up to you! But before you make any changes, there are a few interior design trends for spring 2023 that you may want to consider for your space.

From bright colors to bold shapes, we're seeing a lot of fresh styles floating around. If you’re lost for ideas or just want some inspiration, then keep reading below as we outline some of the biggest trends in interior design this season.

Earth Tones

Building off of the popularity of the color green over the previous years, we’re also seeing a shift towards other earth tones this spring. While neutral colors have always been hailed as classics (especially as a beginner-friendly baseline), it seems like the recent, go-to colors for interior design have typically been off-white shades, beiges, and grays.

Earth tones welcome a bit of warmth into your color palette. Warm browns and caramels, dark forest greens, and even apricot and plum-like colors are creeping into interior design: all warm tones. But for all those who prefer cool tones—have no fear. There’s room for sage green, walnut brown, and dark seafoam blue in your home, too.

Sculptural Accent Furniture

Some may argue that the Roche Bobois Bubble sofa is already a thing of the past; trends, after all, move on so quickly! Regardless, we are seeing a lot of more creative designs when it comes to accent furniture. From coffee tables in fun, curved, blob-like designs to eccentric chairs, there’s a definite shift away from cookie-cutter furniture—and towards furniture that makes you stop in your tracks.

Its difficult to pinpoint why this is beginning to become so popular. Perhaps it is a mixture of spending more time indoors and being driven to create a more inspiring interior space, the move towards playfulness in and of itself in interior design, and the rise of DIY and how-to videos on carefully curating one’s personal aesthetic.

The Stuff That Lasts

Sustainability, repurposing, and sourcing vintage pieces have also been trendy these last years, and many are choosing instead to buy older, quality pieces as opposed to new, cheap, and quickly out of style. Likely, people have been getting rather bored with seeing the same furniture in every magazine, in everyone’s household. Unique pieces that are conversation-starters are beginning to be preferred, and this means choosing a piece that will stand the test of time, in both quality and design.

In regards to style, however, Art Deco seems to be a favorite, likely as it incorporates a lot of the other trends we’re seeing in 2023: bright and/or bold colors, vibrant patterns (usually natural—florals, leaves, etc.) and distinct textures, and unique, sculptural furniture pieces.

The '80s, The '90s, & The Patterns

As a complete 180-degree turn around from the minimalist, monochromatic standard that has infiltrated modern-day interior design, the bright colors, bold patterns, and interesting shapes of the '80s and '90s are making their return. Younger generations in particular (namely those who only saw the end of these decades or were very young when they happened—Millennials and Gen Z) seem to prefer trends like this. Be it youthfulness or the exhaustion around neutrals (or both of these things combined!) '80s and '90s throwback designs are becoming popular in fashion and design. Although, this is often now marketed as “vintage.”

Using the Ultrafragola Mirror as an example (a trend from last year that could remain in last year), sculptural, fun designs and bright colors of Memphis Group have taken ahold of many.
