Although autumn doesn’t officially start until September 21st, for many, the start of the month heralds in the season of pumpkin spice, trick-or-treating, and (hopefully) cooler weather. From day trips to farms outside of the city to the themed nights on the Boardwalk, the Santa Cruz area is packed with opportunities to experience the very best of the fall season.
Check out some of the indoor and outdoor activities (for all ages!) that are running during the months of September, October, and November in and around Santa Cruz.
Outdoor Activities
Known for its gorgeous scenery—including the sprawling coast, the state parks to the north, and the farms just outside of the city—Santa Cruz offers year-around outdoor activities, with something out there for everyone.
Farms & Wine Walks
While the summer months offer fresh veggies and berries (including U-Pick!), autumn at Santa Cruz farms switch gears with apple picking (earlier in the season) and pumpkin patches (typically in October). These family-friendly excursions help support local farmers and also make for a great day out.
Though there are a number of farms in the region, the following have apples and/or pumpkins specifically available to pick/purchase:
-
Cal Poly Swanton Pacific Ranch (be sure to check their websites for updates!)
For adults, the eastern part of Santa Cruz County (Watsonville, Corralitos) is home to a fair share of vineyards and wineries. Many of these establishments have tastings and wine walks where guests can stroll through the property. Additionally, some have clubs where member fees provide certain perks and benefits. These are just a few options:
Halloween Events
The month of October sees a lot of spooky events—especially on the Boardwalk. In previous years, this area has hosted 13 Days of Halloween on the Wharf, an event with different nightly events. This year, they are organizing Boardwalk Halloween, which includes prizes for best costume, the Fright Walk, and other attractions for kids and adults alike. They also have a trick-or-treat package (candy and a collectable bag) available for purchase. More information about the event and tickets can be found here.
Various community Halloween events are also being hosted around the city, from neighborhood trick-or-treating to The Catalyst Club’s Costume Party.
Indoor Activities
For those that might not like the (sometimes fickle!) weather that Santa Cruz has outside of the summer months, there are a number of indoor activities that can be enjoyed regardless of rain or shine.
Cine Insomnia at the Landmark Theater
A literal landmark in the Santa Cruz downtown, the Landmark Theater is a historic cinema that runs both new releases and older, classic films (both cult and otherwise). Cine Insomnia is the theater’s film series of late-night showings, which are scheduled for certain days from September to December.
But don’t fret—despite the scary season, these movies span a range of genres. Some of the films include Se7en (the 20th anniversary of crime classic), The Room, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and even famous international features such as House (Hausu) from Japan. More information can be found here.
Open Studios Art Tour
Run by the Arts Council Santa Cruz County, the Open Studios Art Tour is a special, self-guided event where local artists allow participants to view their studios, workshops, homes, and other workspaces. This year, there are over 340 artists involved with works in a vast array of mediums and exploring a wide variety of themes, The Open Studios Art Tour seeks to strengthen community through engaging in Santa Cruz's unique and creative culture.
This event (now celebrating its 40th year!) runs for the first three weeks of October with the purpose of showcasing Santa Cruz County artists and the work that they create. Download the Artist Guide on their website for a full list of participants, times and locations, and special exhibitions that may be taking place.
