Ferris wheel at Santa Cruz County Fair, Watsonville

There’s always something happening in the month of September in Santa Cruz: the hot weather from the summer begins to ease up, University students are preparing for the start of class, and many take to the waves—as California Surfing Day falls on the 20th!

Of course, it’s always great to get up and get out, but for those not sure of what to do this month, here are a few fun activities for those of all ages!

Hoops And Scoops

Hosted by The Penny Ice Creamery (913 Cedar Street), Hoops and Scoops is a family-friendly event. Like its name suggests, Hoops and Scoops combines hula hooping and ice cream—though maybe you shouldn’t try to do both at the same time!

The Penny Ice Creamery has a number of locations across Santa Cruz County. This event is being hosted in downtown Santa Cruz on Cedar Street (between Locust Street and Church Street), a block away from the library. This road will be closed off for the event from 2pm to 7pm on September 20th. Participants who bring their own hula hoop can receive free fluff with the purchase of ice cream.

32nd Annual Aloha Outrigger Races

Another free, family-friendly event, the Aloha Outrigger Races is on its 32nd year! The Pu Pu ‘O Hawaii Outrigger Club, which combines both beginner and intermediate racers, will be taking off the morning of September 21st, with the first race starting at 9:30am. Admission is free for non-participants, so those passing by can enjoy cheering on the teams.

1pm, however, sees some performances at the Wharf Stage by Kūhai Hālau O Mehanakealohakalaua'eikapoli Pā 'Ōlapa Kahiko. Awards will also be given out to the winners around this time. This event is weather dependent and may be rescheduled.

Visit the City of Santa Cruz website here for more information.

The Santa Cruz Triathlon

The Santa Cruz Triathlon is celebrating its 42nd year raising money for local youth programs. Registration is still open, but it is also free for spectators who want to cheer on the athletes who are participating. The Santa Cruz Triathlon begins at 7am on September 22nd and runs, pun intended, through the city.

There are numerous road closures for the bike portion of this event, primarily along Delaware Road. Additionally, the running portion will take place down along the coastal trail on West Cliff Drive—hence why the Santa Cruz Triathlon is particularly renowned for its scenic beauty!

The Santa Cruz County Fair

Though hosted in Watsonville, the Santa Cruz County Fair is a favorite of many in the area. This year, this family-friendly event is happening from September 11th to September 15th. Highlights include live music, carnival rides and games, animals, The Horse Show, and more.

The Santa Cruz Metro is also offering free rides and discounted tickets to the fair upon arrival. There are two available routes, the 79F (daily) and 79 (weekends).

More information and tickets can be found on their website here.
