Upwards view of thick bamboo trees

Considered by many to be an area hidden gem (although it has been growing in popularity over the last few years), Bamboo Giant Nursery and Gardens is located at 5601 Freedom Boulevard. Tucked away into the hills of Aptos, California, this area can be easily overlooked by passersby. But just down a narrow drive, surrounded by lush trees, is where you’ll find over 15 acres of beautiful gardens.

While yes, the grounds are mainly a nursery, Santa Cruz County residents and visitors alike will enjoy the atmosphere and charm of the bamboo gardens.

How It All Started

Bamboo Giant Nursery and Gardens is a family business (and has been for over 25 years), specializing in a number of different types of bamboo. It’s one of the largest bamboo displays in the entire continent.

Currently, there are over 50 types available—from the shorter, shrub-like Kumasaca, to the unique color of the Himalayan Blue. However, the nursery has experience with over 80 different species. These plants, when cared for correctly, can make for an excellent (and fast-growing!) addition to a garden.

The company also runs a blog for the care and maintenance of bamboo plants, which is a great resource for those considering their own bamboo garden or for those interested in some great tips and tricks.

Highlights And Events

But what makes Bamboo Giant Nursery and Gardens a must-see? Well, like its name suggests it’s more than just a nursery! Its gardens, with incredible ambiance and picturesque walkways, are a big draw for visitors. Here, guests can explore the winding paths lined with towering bamboo grasses and other plants, as well as enjoy the beautiful lily pond and waterfall that are central features.

Photographers in particular, both amateur and professional, have popularized this location for its scenic beauty and unique photo opportunities. There are a few rules and regulations that visitors must follow when taking photos or filming (such as keeping to the walkways)—but it is allowed and encouraged. More information about this can be found on their website

With a small outdoor picnic area and clearing, the nursery and gardens also hosts private events, such as parties and weddings. As well, they have a professional photographer available for garden photoshoots, perfect for anniversaries, family portraits, maternity photos, engagements, and more.

There are also several classes and events hosted by Bamboo Giant Nursery and Gardens. In the past, they’ve had a nighttime event where guests were able to walk through the gardens and participate in a sort of scavenger hunt-like game. They are interested in hosting a wider variety of events and classes in the future.
