Often, most of us are so caught up on the day-to-day hustle and bustle of life that we forget the common things we need to do to keep our Santa Cruz homes safe guarded from the increase of winter bills and weather.  Relax, below are a few ways to lighten the burden and free up your time as well as adding a few extra dollars back into your pockets.

• Cleaning your gutters – It’s as easy as one, two, three.  When fall sets in it is a good time to grab the spatula or scrapper and ladder and head outside.  Clearing the fall leaves and debris from your gutters will free up any blocking made allowing melting snow and ice to flow freely.  By doing this, you are removing the possibilities of water seepage into your Santa Cruz home that could cost you a lot to repair.

• Reverse your ceiling fans – Most of you are more than likely lofting a brow at this tip but trust me it is going to save you lots of money in the end.  By reversing your ceiling fans from its summer operations, you are now forcing the warm air in your Santa Cruz home downwards instead of upwards.  This allows you to keep a free flowing warmer circulation of air in your home without having to constantly crank up the heat.  The easiest way to know you have correctly set your ceiling fan for the winter season is by standing beneath it and making sure that the blades are turning clockwise.

• Wrap those pipes – Freezing water is often a nightmare and will most often times cost you money that could have been avoided.  Prevent it before the first frost hits!  Make sure that the water to your hose bibs is shut off at the shut off valve inside your home, and that the lines are drained.  Check all crawl spaces in the garages and basements for any exposed or non-insulated pipes.  Cover them in pre-molded foam rubber sleeves or fiberglass insulation.  You can pick these up at any local hardware store near you.

Here’s hoping that a few tricks to winterizing your home will help you save lots and keep you from future headaches.  Everyone loves to keep a few extra dollars in their pockets and this is a great way to ensure that your hard-earned money stay’s in them.  Keep your Santa Cruz home protected from the harsh winter days and nights!
