One of the oldest neighborhoods in the city of Santa Cruz, Mission Hill, also known as the Mission Hill Historic District, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Centrally-located and recognized for its family-friendly atmosphere, mixture of residential and commercial areas, and notable architecture, Mission Hill is a desirable place to live for a diverse selection of homebuyers.
Mission Hill is centered on Mission Street, and defined roughly by the following boundaries: the intersection of the train tracks and the highway in the north, River Street around to Pacific Avenue in the east, Church Street across to Chestnut Street in the south, and then up past Mission Street to Storey Street. For those seeking an upbeat and vibrant community, Mission Hill provides residents with amenities, activities, and so much more.
Rich History & Historic Architecture
Situated just north of the Santa Cruz downtown, the neighborhood of Mission Hill is a historic district and was one of the first neighborhoods in the city. While some of the buildings have been demolished over the years (typically from general disrepair and sometimes even natural disasters) there are still a number of significant homes and buildings existing in this district—and they make up Mission Hill’s distinct charm!
Mission Hill is home to the Santa Cruz Mission, the chapel being a famous marker of the city. A replica now, it was founded originally in 1791, and the Adobe church next door was founded just two years afterwards. As an official state of California historic landmark, the area also includes the Mission Plaza garden, the Holy Cross Catholic Church, and the Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park.
In regards to residential properties, there are notable buildings located on and around Mission Street. Well-maintained, these still-standing homes are constructed in a range of historic styles, including Queen Anne, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Craftsman, and other adjacent architectural styles.
Family-Friendly Neighborhood
The neighborhood of Mission Hill comprises primarily single-family homes, with some condos in the area, and despite its close proximity to the downtown, it feels quite secluded. These homes are very rarely on the market because of their desirability, but have the square footage and the space to accommodate a growing family.
One of the most recognizable condo buildings in the neighborhood is the historic Piedmont Court complex. Built in a Mission Revival style in 1912, this condo is a 55+ only building and offers beautiful courtyard views in an excellent location.
For families, there are options in regards to schools and education in or around the neighborhood. Mission Hill Middle School is located right within the community, while Santa Cruz High School, Bay View Elementary School, and Westlake Elementary school are found a reasonable distance away.
Downtown Amenities
As Mission Hill borders the downtown district, residents can easily bike or drive to the city center. This part of Santa Cruz, a tourist spot in the summertime, has a wide variety of things to see and do. This includes everything from grocery stores like Trader Joe’s, to the historic Santa Cruz Cinema. The boutiques along Pacific Avenue are a highlight and the beach is roughly a 7 or 8 minute drive away.
For more (less expensive) options, the Gateway Plaza north of the neighborhood offers more of the everyday necessities. Additionally, the neighborhood has a community center, a number of cafes and coffee shops, and the town clock as a landmark.
The neighborhood of Mission Hill, with its eccentric, historic homes and sought-after location, is a great place to call home.
