With so many beautiful beaches in the Santa Cruz area, you might be having a hard time deciding just which one to visit!

To help make it easier, keep reading to discover the best beach for any occasion – from watching sunrises & sunsets, to surfing, and even the most kid friendly spots.

Surfing

So gear up in your wetsuit and get ready to dive into the waters of Santa Cruz County that are a surfers paradise

In fact, back in the summer of 1885, Hawaiian princes Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana'ole, David Kawananakoa and Edward Keli'iahonui introduced surfing to the area by riding those Santa Cruz waves. So, after all these years, you can expect to find some extremely talented surfers. Whether you want to kick back, relax and watch as they “shred the gnar” or head out into the waves yourself, here are three beaches you don’t want to miss.

Steamer Lane

This incredible beach is a hot spot for watching pros do their thing. With some waves reaching almost 18-feet, you should only tackle these swells if you’re experienced. Home to many surf competitions, including the O'Neill Coldwater classic and the Santa Cruz Longboard Surf Contest, this is quite the iconic spot.

The Hook

This expansive surf spot can be found on 41st Avenue at East Cliff Drive. High above the bay, a blufftop makes for the perfect viewing area. It’s even lined with picnic tables and benches, so you’ve got a great view of surfers as they catch air and slice through barrelling waves.

Pleasure Point Park

If your young ones are hoping to catch a glimpse of the talented surfers in the area, Pleasure Point is the perfect place. It’s a wonderful family-friendly spot that boasts a vibrant surf scene.

Davenport Landing

With a striking coastline and easy water access, kids are free to explore this magnificent area. And, during low tide, colorful crabs and stunning starfish can be found in rock pools – making for the perfect afternoon adventure.

Natural Bridge State Beach

Courtesy of a large beach cove surrounded by sandy slopes, your little ones can’t wander too far at this beach! And, for added fun, you can follow the iconic white sand through a nature trail, which will lead you to a eucalyptus-sanctuary for the migrating Monarch butterflies that pass through the area.

Capitola Beach

The consistently small waves at Capitola Beach make the perfect practice spot for first time surfers. For something more low key, simply soak in your surroundings and enjoy the salty sea breeze! With a lagoon nestled behind the beach, you can also discover the area's native birds as they soar high above.  After you’ve worked up an appetite, take a stroll to discover some of the various shops and restaurants that line the beach – there’s something for everyone.

New Brighton

With towering bluffs, lush wildlife, and sandy shores it’s no surprise that New Brighton is a popular destination that attracts visitors and locals alike! Nestled on the coast of Santa Cruz, this 93-acre park provides picturesque views of Monterey Bay and is a haven from the hustle and bustle of city life. With campgrounds available, you can even stay the night – so don’t worry about cutting your adventure short!

Castle Beach

While it no longer has the same name, the area was once known as Castle Beach courtesy of James Pilkingtons now-demolished landmark castle, which was used as a popular bathhouse in the 20th century. Now named Seabright Beach, the quaint sandy shores stretch half a mile, and is a hot-spot for those looking to catch some rays. If you make your way onto the docks, you can enjoy some great views of boats as they make their way out of the Santa Cruz Harbor. Or, bring your furry friend along with you to partake in a classic summer pastime – grab some wood, get a fire started and toast some tasty marshmallows!

Sunset & Sunrise

To catch a glimpse of a beautiful sunrise or sunset, you need to know the best spots! Courtesy of its location, Natural Bridge State Beach offers postcard-worthy sunrises & sunsets.

At sundown, you can enjoy a fiery display at West Cliff Drive, and unsurprisingly, at Sunset State Beach too. With numerous vantage points to bask in the golden glow, you’re guaranteed to catch some jaw-dropping scenery.
