everything you need to after after you move into your new santa cruz home

You’ve found your perfect home, completed the purchase process, hired movers and successfully moved all your stuff.

That’s it right? Time to enjoy your new life in your new home.

Not quite.

While you’ve nearly crossed the finish line, there are a few details still left to be taken care of. Luckily, we’ve compiled this guide with everything you need to do, after you’ve moved into your new Santa Cruz home.

Check Over Everything

Now that everything has been unloaded from the moving truck, run through everything that’s been unpacked to ensure nothing has been missed. Hopefully you’ve prepared a checklist of packed items that you can reference.

If something is missing, you’ll want to notify the movers as soon as possible. You should then be able to quickly track down the item, whether its still on the moving truck or back at your old home.

You should also check for any items that were damaged in the move. If there is damage, let the moving company know right away. Any reputable mover will want to make sure you are taken care of and compensated for any damage caused by their employees.

Get Your Utilities Going

Hopefully, you’ve scheduled installations or any required service calls ahead of time. It’s probably a good idea to schedule any service visits for the day after your move, or later. You’ll likely be too tired after a hard day of moving to do much more than sleep anyway.

Start with the essential services, like heat, electricity and hot water, before moving to the those less essential items like cable and internet. Depending on how long your new home has been unoccupied, you’ll either need to set up new services, or transfer existing services into your name.

Start by Unpacking the Essentials

Moving days are tiring, full-day affairs. You’re going to be exhausted at the end of it.

When it comes to unpacking, be realistic in what you can accomplish on day one. Plan to take care of the essentials that you’ll definitely want access to at the end of a long day.

We’re talking a comfortable bed to sleep in, and supplies for a revitalizing shower at minimum. Don’t even worry about the kitchen - there’s always take out!

Inspect Your New Home Thoroughly

Before you’ve unpacked the majority of your belongings, it’s a great time to review each and every nook and cranny for issues or small damage.

If its a new construction home, the home will likely still be under warranty. New home warranties typically only last for 2 year, so it's imperative to find any damage and report it to the builder as soon as possible.

If it’s an older, resale home you probably won’t have the luxury of a home warranty. You can still take this opportunity to take stock of small repairs needed while the home is mostly empty.

A Great Time for Touch Ups

Why not take advantage of a nearly empty home, while your household items are still neatly packed up?

You’ll never have an opportunity quite like this again to take care of those small touch ups.

Touch up the interior walls with a fresh coat of paint, replace outdated or damaged fixtures or install new cabinet hardware. These small changes can breathe new life into an older home! Lastly, the time is never better for a real, deep clean. Before everything is unpacked, consider hiring a professional carpet cleaner or even renting a steam cleaner yourself.

Secure Your Home

Especially for an older home that has had multiple owners over the years, it can be nearly impossible to know how many people have keys.

Now that you’ve moved in, it’s a great time to replace all locks. The piece of mind will be well worth the price tag.

Also, make sure to test all smoke detectors and ensure you have enough to cover each floor of your new home.

Are there fire extinguishers that are easily accessible?

Finish Unpacking & Live Your Life

That’s it - finish unpacking but take a moment to just be in the moment.

Moving to a new home is likely the start of an exciting new chapter in your life, so don’t get so caught up in the minute details that you lose sight of the big picture.
