Santa Cruz Shakespeare & Other Holiday Events

As we make our way into December and the last few weeks of 2025, Santa Cruz is heralding the holiday season with plenty of ways to celebrate—with something for everyone at every age. From the historic holiday train that takes passengers up into the forest, to parades and live music around the city, Santa Cruz makes it easy to get out and enjoy the beautiful sights and the company of others.

Now hopefully the weather will be good

Santa Cruz Holiday Season At A Glance

December 6th: Downtown Holiday Parade

December 6th: Capitola Village Holiday Cookie Walk

December 6th: The Lighted Boat Parade

December 13th: The Winter Art Market

December 13th: Santa Cruz Symphony Holiday Concert

December 20th: The Santa Cruz Ballet Premieres The Nutcracker

December 20th: Winter on the Wharf

Santa Cruz Shakespeare

Much-beloved, Santa Cruz Shakespeare is a company that performs (primarily in the summertime) at the outdoor theater at DeLaveaga Park. Like their name suggests, they put on Shakespeare plays annually, but their repertoire of main productions do include a variety of straight plays and musicals from other playwrights. The 2025 season saw performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, "Master Harold"...and the Boys, Into The Woods, and Pericles. Additionally, other nights of the week see special performances and readings.

For the holiday season, Santa Cruz Shakespeare is putting together A Christmas Carol, which will be performed at the Veterans Memorial Hall (at 846 Front Street). Shows are being held almost every day of December, with more performances towards the end of the month. The opening show is December 4th and the closing show is December 24th, with both 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM offered. More information, including tickets, parking, and the cast list, can be found on their website.

The upcoming main productions for 2026 include Fences, Much Ado About Nothing, Macbeth, and more.

Events At The Boardwalk

Every year, the Santa Cruz Boardwalk hosts several family-friendly events—called Boardwalk Winter Wonderland. These include discounted ride tickets, photos with Santa, discounts at the local stores and shops, and more. This year promises light and drone shows (every 15 minutes for the former, between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM) as well as food, drinks, and other activities.

One of the biggest attractions at the Boardwalk is the Roaring Camp Railroads holiday train, which offers rides for the holidays, Chanukah, and New Year’s. This train ride takes passengers through the city. As an alternative, Roaring Camp also offers a Holiday Tree Walk from Felton to Bear Mountain.

The Boardwalk is also hosting Winter On The Wharf on December 20th, which is a toy drive. Santa as well as Anna and Elsa will be there to take pictures, and other highlights include face painting, holiday decorations, balloons, and more.

New Year’s Eve In Santa Cruz

Live music, performing arts venues, and restaurants across Santa Cruz are hosting various New Year’s Eve celebrations, some with their own themes—and even toddler-friendly early morning/noon event for moms and kids at the Boulder Creek Recreation Center. From the Catalyst to the Crow's Nest, there is a good time to be had for everyone.

And for those who might not have stayed up late the night before (or for those who did and would like to get out anyways), First Day Hikes are happening across the state celebrating the first of the year. Some of these include:

Wilder Ranch State Park

Big Basin Redwoods State Park

Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park

The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park

Santa Cruz: Indoor And Outdoor Activities This Fall

Although autumn doesn’t officially start until September 21st, for many, the start of the month heralds in the season of pumpkin spice, trick-or-treating, and (hopefully) cooler weather. From day trips to farms outside of the city to the themed nights on the Boardwalk, the Santa Cruz area is packed with opportunities to experience the very best of the fall season.

Check out some of the indoor and outdoor activities (for all ages) that are running during the months of September, October, and November in and around Santa Cruz.

Outdoor Activities

Known for its gorgeous scenery—including the sprawling coast, the state parks to the north, and the farms just outside of the city—Santa Cruz offers year-around outdoor activities, with something out there for everyone.

Farms & Wine Walks

While the summer months offer fresh veggies and berries (including U-Pick), autumn at Santa Cruz farms switch gears with apple picking (earlier in the season) and pumpkin patches (typically in October). These family-friendly excursions help support local farmers and also make for a great day out.

Though there are a number of farms in the region, the following have apples and/or pumpkins specifically available to pick/purchase:

Rodoni Farm

Cal Poly Swanton Pacific Ranch (be sure to check their websites for updates)

Post Street Farm

Crystal Bay Farm

Gizdich Ranch

For adults, the eastern part of Santa Cruz County (Watsonville, Corralitos) is home to a fair share of vineyards and wineries. Many of these establishments have tastings and wine walks where guests can stroll through the property. Additionally, some have clubs where member fees provide certain perks and benefits. These are just a few options:

Windy Oaks Winery

Storrs Winery & Vineyards

Alfaro Family Vineyard-Winery

Anatum Winery

Halloween Events

The month of October sees a lot of spooky events—especially on the Boardwalk. In previous years, this area has hosted 13 Days of Halloween on the Wharf, an event with different nightly events. This year, they are organizing Boardwalk Halloween, which includes prizes for best costume, the Fright Walk, and other attractions for kids and adults alike. They also have a trick-or-treat package (candy and a collectable bag) available for purchase. More information about the event and tickets can be found here.

Various community Halloween events are also being hosted around the city, from neighborhood trick-or-treating to The Catalyst Club’s Costume Party.

Indoor Activities

For those that might not like the (sometimes fickle) weather that Santa Cruz has outside of the summer months, there are a number of indoor activities that can be enjoyed regardless of rain or shine.

Cine Insomnia at the Landmark Theater

A literal landmark in the Santa Cruz downtown, the Landmark Theater is a historic cinema that runs both new releases and older, classic films (both cult and otherwise). Cine Insomnia is the theater’s film series of late-night showings, which are scheduled for certain days from September to December.

But don’t fret—despite the scary season, these movies span a range of genres. Some of the films include Se7en (the 20th anniversary of crime classic), The Room, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and even famous international features such as House (Hausu) from Japan. More information can be found here.

Open Studios Art Tour

Run by the Arts Council Santa Cruz County, the Open Studios Art Tour is a special, self-guided event where local artists allow participants to view their studios, workshops, homes, and other workspaces. This year, there are over 340 artists involved with works in a vast array of mediums and exploring a wide variety of themes, The Open Studios Art Tour seeks to strengthen community through engaging in Santa Cruz's unique and creative culture.

This event (now celebrating its 40th year) runs for the first three weeks of October with the purpose of showcasing Santa Cruz County artists and the work that they create. Download the Artist Guide on their website for a full list of participants, times and locations, and special exhibitions that may be taking place.

Live Music & Performing Arts Venues

Santa Cruz’s live music venues have shows almost daily throughout the autumn, and there’s something for everyone’s tastes

The Catalyst Club

Santa Cruz Shakespeare At The Grove

Rio Theatre

Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium

Upcoming Festivals

Fall has a lot of festivals and things to do in and around Santa Cruz. Marks these dates on your calendar:

September 27th: Santa Cruz Mountains Harvest Festival

September 27th and 28th: Capitola Beach Festival

Back To School Shopping in Santa Cruz

Summer always feels like it’s going on forever—and then suddenly stores are advertising sales and it’s time for back to school. With the oncoming academic year quickly approaching (or already arrived in some cases), it may be a bit overwhelming to check everything off your shopping list.

The city of Santa Cruz has a number of stores and shops that stock the essentials, from backpacks to new clothes and everything in between. Get ready for the start of school with some things that new residents, students, and locals should know.

Shopping in the Downtown

Santa Cruz’s downtown spans Pacific Avenue, from Mission Street/Water Street in the north to Laurel Street in the south. With a range of retailers including international brands and local businesses, students returning to school can pick up the necessities—stationary, bags, clothing and accessories, and more, in style.

Downtown options include (but are not limited to) the following:

Old School Shoes* (bags, shoes, and accessories)

Free People (women and girls' clothing)

Gap * Gap Kids (clothing)

Lively Kids* (clothing and accessories)

Comicopolis* (graphic novels, comics, and books)

Atlantis Fantasyworld* (comics, figurines and merchandise)

Pacific Wave*

Urban Outfitters (preteen/adolescent clothing and accessories)

Sockshop & Shoe Company* (shoes, socks, and accessories)

Stores with a * indicate that they are small or local businesses, while names that are bolded offer student discounts. However, be aware that percentage off varies and also requires a student ID.

Additionally, there are a number of thrift stores in Santa Cruz, so for those looking to pick up something new-to-them for less, or for those searching for something unique, secondhand or vintage stores are a great alternative. And it’s environmentally friendly

Santa Cruz Sidewalk Sales

The downtown area, as well, also hosts Sidewalk Sales, with merchandise decorating the exteriors of stores and the sidewalk around them. Again, sales differ from retailer to retailer and not all stores downtown participate, but it is an excellent opportunity to pick up something brand new at a discount.

The next Downtown Santa Cruz Sidewalk Sale runs from August 29th to September 1st. More information can be found here.

The Essentials at Bookshop Santa Cruz

With titles for anxious students and parents, Bookshop Santa Cruz is a landmark in the downtown area, and offers a wide range of titles. For this school upcoming school year, browse from books required for certain classes, study guides and self-help, cheap and easy recipes for post-secondary students living alone, or even picture books that answer questions about going to school for the first time. Or, for those looking to break free of the textbooks and course readings, Bookshop Santa Cruz offers a wealth of titles to enjoy for fun.

For university students, Bookshop Santa Cruz also partners with UC Santa Cruz and stocks apparel, supplies, and required reading. It may have a title in stock that the Bay Tree Campus Store does not currently have (or one might prefer a physical store to ordering online). The Bay Tree Campus Store often has back to school discounts and special offers for students.

Upcoming Summer Events

Santa Cruz also has a few events coming up in the next few weeks to celebrate the end of summer.

National Roller Coaster Day [August 16th]

Beach Cleanup at Cowell Beach [run by Save Our Shores, August 16th]

Downtown Santa Cruz: Makers Market [August 17th]

Neighborhood block parties [run by Santa Cruz Neighbors, August 23rd and 24th]

Midtown Fridays Summer Block Party [August 29th]

Fall Campout at the Beach [fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, September 12th to 13th]

What's New In Santa Cruz For The Summer

Want to make the most of the summer in Santa Cruz? From catching sun on the beach to seeing a new release at the Landmark Del Mar Theatre (or a surprise movie at the Secret Film Festival), there’s always something to see and do. Here are some updates—as well as some activities to consider—for the summer season here in the city

Vertigo 360, A New Ride At The Boardwalk

Following the construction of the Ferris Wheel (the Dream Wheel) and the new spin ride, Surge, in 2024, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk will welcome yet another new addition to the amusement park. Described as a thrill ride that swings seated guests around on a pendulum, “Vertigo 360” is set to be completed around spring of next year.

The park already houses several thrill rides, including the popular Pirate Ship, Giant Dipper (the historic roller coaster), and Logger’s Revenge (a flume ride). However, there are still plenty of fun alternatives at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk for those who might want something slightly less intense this summer

Camping at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park

A gem of the Santa Cruz area, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park is a popular destination for walking/hiking, fishing, and camping. This year, however, the park has been undergoing construction and delays have meant that camping will not be available at the park until August.

Further updates about the park can be found here.

Movies On The Beach

Back for another year, Movies on the Beach has released their summer schedule. Happening Friday nights from June to August at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, this free event always draws a crowd. Guests are invited to bring a blanket or a low-backed chair for movie-viewing, and snacks and refreshments can be purchased on-site.

This year, the summer lineup includes Clueless, Ghostbusters, The Goonies, and, of course, The Lost Boys—which kicks off the event on June 13th. Rumors of a remake of the classic 1987 film have been circling around, but the Warner Bros. production seems to have halted for the moment. Regardless, perhaps a remake could be filmed at the same location(s) as the original, right in Santa Cruz

The entire movie schedule can be found here.

Saturdays at the Museum of Natural History

The Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History, located at 1305 East Cliff Drive, has events all throughout the year, including guided walking tours, after-school activities for kids, and scavenger hunts. Their Saturday programs are themed and always bring something exciting and new, though they also have their permanent event called Saturdays In The Soil, where participants can garden together. Past events have included oil painting classes, special exhibitions, and more.

Additionally, the museum is also hosting a beach clean up event for World Oceans Day on June 8th, and sign-ups can be found here. More information, including other and future events, can be found on their website.

M.K Contemporary Art Gallery Exhibitions

Formerly Curated [By The Sea], the M.K. Contemporary Art gallery is located in downtown Santa Cruz and showcases works by local artists. From now until June 29th, the gallery is currently featuring their latest exhibition, Here to Eternity, which is in partnership with Santa Cruz Pride.

Past exhibitions have included “Divergent Visions” (on alternative photography), “Feasting on the World” (beauty and chaos), and “Ten” (which featured the works of ten of Santa Cruz’s most well-known artists). These can also be viewed in the online archives.

Their website can be found here.

Springtime Events & Festivals In The Santa Cruz Area

As we welcome the warmer spring weather in Santa Cruz, there are an abundance of things to do in and around the city. For some, that could mean experiencing the great outdoors—whether walking the dog along the beach or hiking in the parks north of the city—while for others that could mean staying close to the downtown and enjoying the sun that way. No matter what you're searching for, there's something for everyone. Here are a few of the springtime events and festivals that are happening between the months of April and May.

Holiday and Themed Events

It’s the hoppiest time of year Easter falls in the month of April and there are a number of events celebrating this holiday in Santa Cruz.

Roaring Camp is hosting their annual Easter event, the “Eggstraordinary Easter Egg Hunt”, which is happening April 19th and April 20th. This family-friendly event will feature, of course, the Easter egg hunt, as well as live music, arts and crafts (including candle-making), prizes, and more. Plus, the steam train is also operating and offering rides. Tickets must be purchased online in advance, and more details about the event can be found on their website.

As an alternative (a little bit closer to home) the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is having their own Easter egg hunt. Boardwalk Bunny Hunt at the Wharf is happening during most of April, from the 1st to the 20th. A $10 package purchase includes a map of the egg hunt locations, a collectable bag, prizes, and an $8 MyBoardwalk card for games, rides, and more. More information can be found here.

Earth Day is happening on April 22nd, but there are a few events going on during the weekend before. Santa Cruz Earth Day, a free event, will be taking over the downtown area on April 19th, from 11:30AM to 4:00. Points of interest include live music, a fashion show, face painting, a photobooth, assorted vendors, and more. More information and photos of previous years can be found on their website.

Assorted Spring Events

The last Saturday in April (April 26th this year) is Independent Bookstore Day—a nationwide event to celebrate reading, the community, and independent bookstores. Bookshop Santa Cruz, a landmark of the city since 1966, will be commemorating this day with a prize wheel, assorted activities, and exclusive merch/books/signed copies waiting for those who stop by. More information can be found here.

Avid readers of the Santa Cruz area can also participate in Bookshop Santa Cruz’s Spring Reading Challenge, which ends May 4th. Those who read two of the eight books on their list can receive a tote bag and sticker as a reward. Details of the challenge, as well as upcoming ones, are listed on their website.

More events are happening in the month of May, including the Boardwalk Drone Show. Starting at 8:30PM on May 17th, this is a free event to celebrate the upcoming summer season. If you’re in the area, don’t forget to look up More information will be added on their website here.

Live Music and Festivals

There are countless opportunities to enjoy some live music in Santa Cruz. The Redwood Mountain Faire is on from May 31st to June 1st this year. Featuring local bands and live music, as well as vendors and artists, this event supports non-profit organizations and services based in the area. Tickets and more information can be found on their website.

Wine Walks are another popular event, typically in the spring and autumn time every year. The annual Downtown Santa Cruz Wine Walk is taking place on May 18th. Participants will receive a commemorative glass and a map of the 12 participating wineries with a ticket. Participants must be 21 years of age or older. Tickets are discounted if purchased in advance here. However, there are a multitude of wine walk events in the spring, including similar walks in Capitola and Watsonville.

Recognized for its exciting events, beautiful nature views, and friendly neighborhoods, the Santa Cruz County area is an exceptional place to call home. Contact Lauren Spencer today to start your home search in Santa Cruz, Watsonville, Scotts Valley, and more.

Indoor Activities to Drive Away The January/Winter Blues

While Santa Cruz is known for its beautiful, mild temperatures, you can still sometimes (unfortunately) experience the winter blues in the city. It can be difficult to enjoy the outdoors when the weather isn't cooperative. For those rainy or colder days where going to the beach or the park isn’t an option, here are a few indoor activities—many of which are suitable for a range of different age groups.

Museums & Science Centers

Santa Cruz offers a wealth of different museums, science centers, and galleries to explore and discover. One of the best parts of these excursions is that they can be both spontaneous or planned far in advance, as many museums do offer special programs and events. Additionally, each one is accessible via both car and public transit.

The Seymour Marine Discovery Center is located in Santa Cruz’s far west end and is part of UCSC. With an aquarium and different exhibits (including a touch pool), this is a fun and educational experience, particularly for young kids. As another family-friendly option, the Santa Cruz Children’s Museum of Discovery fosters interactive learning in a safe environment for very young children and toddlers who want to explore the world and be more hands-on

Alternatively, the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History is also an exciting place to visit, and the center hosts a plethora of events and camps throughout the year for various age groups. Of course, the museum can also be visited year-round with single admission. This small museum centers on area wildlife (not limited to sea life) and the environment—particularly in the realm of preservation and conservation.

In regards to artwork, The Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History features primarily contemporary art and exhibits. While museum would probably appeal more to older kids, this museum is still considered family-friendly Their current featured exhibit is “Accidentally Wes Anderson: Adventures in Santa Cruz” which showcases photography taken in this auteur’s distinct style. This exhibit runs until the spring.

Entertainment & Culture

There’s much to do and see in Santa Cruz, no matter the time of day—from summer programs during afternoons to live music in the evening.

Movie-lovers in particular have a few options around the city, with two major movie theaters: Santa Cruz Cinema, on Pacific Avenue, and the historic Landmark's Del Mar Theatre, which is found just down the street Both offer new and current movies as well as re-releases/flashback films. Similarly, the Rio Theatre, which is a performing arts center, hosts a selection of film festivals throughout the year—the biggest being the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival, which is run by UC Santa Cruz Adventure Rec. This film festival is celebrating its 49th anniversary.

Libraries can sometimes be overlooked, but the many branches across the Santa Cruz area offer some amazing programs for those of all ages. Some of these include Chinese calligraphy, Backgammon and chess competitions, toddler and new parents classes, language-learning classes, Tai Chi, knitting, and so much more. Specific age groups are indicated for each program, with some of the most popular being for kids 0-3, teen and youth, and adults over 65.

Shopping & Excursions

As a more laid-back option, there’s always the opportunity to hit the stores around Santa Cruz (window shopping encouraged). The Capitola Mall is the largest shopping center in the area, with over sixty-five shops and restaurants to discover. And while it might not be swimming weather, many of the shops by the boardwalk—and the Boardwalk Bowl—are still open during the off-season.

If you want to take a day trip for even more shopping, the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto has a lot more options for chain and international stores, including high-end luxury boutiques. It is about a 50 minute (up to an hour depending on traffic) drive from downtown Santa Cruz.

Celebrate the Roaring ‘20s on the Wharf. Known for its wines and exceptional location, Vino By The Sea is hosting a 21+ NYE party. The theme is the 1920s, so guests are invited to bring all the glamor and fashion of the time period.

A ticket includes food and drinks, party favors, live music, and, of course, the countdown. As well, Vino By The Sea has some of the most beautiful views of the water in the entire city. More information can be found here.

Boardwalk Bowls’ New Years Eve Party

For perhaps a more unconventional way to celebrate, Boardwalk Bowl (115 Cliff Street) is hosting their annual New Year’s Eve party. Partygoers can rent a lane for $184, which includes party favors, bowling shoe rentals, and a glass of champagne or cider.

Those interested should know that there is a limit to five people per lane. More information can be found here.

Getting Around Santa Cruz on New Year’s Eve

The Santa Cruz Metro will be running their regular weekday service on December 31st, 2024. This includes both the Amtrak Hwy 17 Express and METRO ParaCruz. However, the Santa Cruz Metro does not operate on New Year’s Day, with the exception of the Highway 17 route, which will be running on the weekend schedule.

Taxi services and ridesharing apps are a popular choice, as parking is not always available (or is limited) for some of the above events. Additionally, ridesharing providers also offer car rentals, for those who may require a vehicle for an extended period of time.

Santa Cruz Events This September

There’s always something happening in the month of September in Santa Cruz: the hot weather from the summer begins to ease up, University students are preparing for the start of class, and many take to the waves—as California Surfing Day falls on the 20th

Of course, it’s always great to get up and get out, but for those not sure of what to do this month, here are a few fun activities for those of all ages

Hoops And Scoops

Hosted by The Penny Ice Creamery (913 Cedar Street), Hoops and Scoops is a family-friendly event. Like its name suggests, Hoops and Scoops combines hula hooping and ice cream—though maybe you shouldn’t try to do both at the same time

The Penny Ice Creamery has a number of locations across Santa Cruz County. This event is being hosted in downtown Santa Cruz on Cedar Street (between Locust Street and Church Street), a block away from the library. This road will be closed off for the event from 2pm to 7pm on September 20th. Participants who bring their own hula hoop can receive free fluff with the purchase of ice cream.

For more information, visit their website here.

32nd Annual Aloha Outrigger Races

Another free, family-friendly event, the Aloha Outrigger Races is on its 32nd year The Pu Pu ‘O Hawaii Outrigger Club, which combines both beginner and intermediate racers, will be taking off the morning of September 21st, with the first race starting at 9:30am. Admission is free for non-participants, so those passing by can enjoy cheering on the teams.

1pm, however, sees some performances at the Wharf Stage by Kūhai Hālau O Mehanakealohakalaua'eikapoli Pā 'Ōlapa Kahiko. Awards will also be given out to the winners around this time. This event is weather dependent and may be rescheduled.

Visit the City of Santa Cruz website here for more information.

The Santa Cruz Triathlon

The Santa Cruz Triathlon is celebrating its 42nd year raising money for local youth programs. Registration is still open, but it is also free for spectators who want to cheer on the athletes who are participating. The Santa Cruz Triathlon begins at 7am on September 22nd and runs, pun intended, through the city.

There are numerous road closures for the bike portion of this event, primarily along Delaware Road. Additionally, the running portion will take place down along the coastal trail on West Cliff Drive—hence why the Santa Cruz Triathlon is particularly renowned for its scenic beauty

More information, including sign-ups and route maps, can be found here.

The Santa Cruz County Fair

Though hosted in Watsonville, the Santa Cruz County Fair is a favorite of many in the area. This year, this family-friendly event is happening from September 11th to September 15th. Highlights include live music, carnival rides and games, animals, The Horse Show, and more.

The Santa Cruz Metro is also offering free rides and discounted tickets to the fair upon arrival. There are two available routes, the 79F (daily) and 79 (weekends).

More information and tickets can be found on their website here.

Other September Events

Other September events include the following:

Apple and seasonal vegetable picking at one of the many Santa Cruz area U-Pick farms

41st Annual Capitola Art & Wine Festival (September 14th and 15th)

The Capitola Beach Festival (September 28th)

Guide to Fruit & Berry Picking (U-Pick Farms) in Santa Cruz County

Though recognized for its beautiful oceanfront cities and communities, Santa Cruz County is also known for its abundant natural areas and farmland—including ranches, family-owned local farms, and vineyards.

From the spring to fall seasons, fruit and berry picking is a popular pastime for those of all ages—both a fun experience for families and individuals alike, but also an excellent way to support local farms. Additionally, for those who are selective, fruit and berry picking allows better longevity and the opportunity to select exactly what you want

Seasons for specific berries and fruit in Santa Cruz County sometimes vary due to weather conditions that year. This could mean earlier or later times for U-Pick farms, depending on a number of factors. Be sure to check with the farm/ranch before planning an excursion… and most of all have fun

Early Spring and Summer (May to June)

Right at the start of the summer months This is the best time of the year to go strawberry picking around Santa Cruz County and some farms hold special events to celebrate—although the Watsonville Strawberry Festival is held in early August

Swanton Berry Farm

25 Swanton Road, Davenport

This U-Pick farm is found northwest of the city of Santa Cruz, past Davenport Beach. Possibly the most popular choice for picking organic strawberries in the county, Swanton Berry Farm is also known for their jams and home made pies/baked goods, both of which use (almost exclusively) their own fruit.

Visit their website here.

The Height of Summer (June to August)

Considered the height of berry-picking season, this is the optimal time for raspberries, olallieberries (which are typically only ripe in the months of June and July), blueberries, and blackberries (ripening further along into the summer). Plus, vegetables and other produce are also in season, such as tomatoes and beans.

Gizdich Ranch

55 Peckham Road, Watsonville

Offering a range of fruit throughout the summertime (strawberries, boysenberries, olallieberries), Gizdich Ranch is another popular U-Pick farm in Santa Cruz County. Beyond summer fruits, they also have apple picking in the fall, as well as home made pies, ice cream, and jams, an antique shop, and small gifts on the premises.

Visit their website here.

Summer to Fall (August to October)

While the berries are now out of season, September is, in particular, the best time to pick apples in the region. As the weather starts to get (a little bit) colder, many farms in Santa Cruz County grow pumpkins, which also can be picked by visitors.

Crystal Bay Farm

40 Zils Road, Watsonville

Perhaps one of the lesser-known destinations, Crystal Bay Farm offers strawberry picking on a smaller scale during the summer months, as well as a stand and a chance to see some animals. This farm also has pumpkins for sale in the autumn (with Halloween decorations throughout the property) which makes for a fun family excursion when the seasons turn. Be aware that there is an entrance fee as well as limited parking.

Visit their website here.

Things To Know Before You Go

Before you plan your trip to the nearest U-Pick berry farm, consider the following:

Double-check the weather and dress appropriately. This could mean rain gear on a cloudy day or a hat/sunscreen during sunny afternoons

Some farms offer containers for your berries for a fee—but it’s suggested you bring your own if possible

Some farms advise that you only pick in certain areas and/or that you only pick above a certain height so that unripe fruit can mature

Cards are often accepted, but consider bringing cash just in case
