community spotlight: san lorenzo valley, california

Take a drive north of Santa Cruz along Highway 9 and you'll encounter a string of charming small towns, majestic parks, and rustic mountain homes.

The San Lorenzo Valley between Santa Cruz and the Bay Area is a treasure trove of galleries, museums, quaint stores, hiking trails, and spacious properties shaded by tall Sequoia trees. It's along these winding rounds that you'll find the perfect sanctuary from urban life.

Here you'll find a chain of closely-connected communities: Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek, Brookdale, and Felton, each with its own unique character.

A Great Place to Live

The San Lorenzo Valley is home to a great mix of people, from professionals who commute to work at the nearby tech hubs, to artists, to families with deep roots in the valley's logging-industry past.

And the properties on display match this variety, with a full range of home types and lot sizes. Here you'll find many rustic cabins, Prairie-style ranchers, traditional frame-and-board houses, and large farm estates.

These homes are usually nestled into sloping landscapes, surrounded by lush meadows and serene forests.

And if you're looking for local amenities, then it'll matter which local town is nearby. Boulder Creek, for example, is on the larger side for the San Lorenzo Valley, so here you can find a lot more restaurants, pubs, parks, and an elementary school. On the other hand, tiny Brookdale hosts a post office, a few businesses, and a lot of trees. But really, all these places are not too far from each other - just a short, scenic drive away.

Things to See & Do

The great thing about the San Lorenzo Valley is the sheer number of attractions and recreational opportunities that it offers.

For example, some of the beautiful parks you can visit are:

  • Big Basin Redwoods State Park - California's oldest state park with miles and miles of scenic trails
  • Loch Lomond Recreation Area - A beautiful lakeside area for all your water-related recreation needs
  • Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park - At the southern end of the valley, this park is known for its old stands of Redwood

And dotted throughout the valley are some famous sightseeing and tourist destinations, enjoyable for visitors and residents alike. Here are just a few:

  • Felton Covered Bridge - This historic bridge is impressive in both height and length. Now open only to foot-traffic, it's definitely worth a visit
  • Roaring Camp Railroads - Take a scenic tour of the mountains on an authentic steam train, taking in some of the area's storied logging history on the way

  • Boulder Creek Golf & Country Club - A beautiful 18-hole course in the midst of the Redwoods and mountains. And if you're not into golf, visit for the excellent restaurant
  • Howden Castle - This anachronism hidden just off the highway near Ben Lomond is available for accommodation
