New Year's partygoers with sparklers and champagne

As 2024 is coming to an end, there are a multitude of ways to ring in the new year and celebrate with friends and family. For those who prefer to get out on December 31st for a more lively affair, the city is hosting a number of themed events, from the downtown to the waterfront—and this includes both family-friendly occasions as well as 21+ gatherings. 


Here are just a few of the New Year’s Eve events happening across the city of Santa Cruz. As an important note, many of these events listed offer discounted tickets if purchased early, and/or VIP packages for guests who want an even more opulent experience.

The Galactic Ball at the Civic Auditorium

Santa Cruz’s Civic Auditorium, organized by Mindwarp Entertainment, is hosting the Galactic Ball, starting at 9PM . This 21+ event invites guests to blast off into the new year with three DJs, a “full-production show”, food and drinks, and more. Additionally, there are VIP bundles available for those who want an even greater experience, with an option for groups of up to six guests (small VIP) and another for groups of up to twelve (large VIP). This event is doesn't have a strict dress code, but there is are space-themed goodies and merchandise available.

Gathering in Gratitude at The 418 Project

For the soulful reveler, the 418 Project (155 South River Street), a community center and non-profit, is having a fundraiser and New Year’s Eve party. This event features live music, spoken word, an aerial performance, and much more. Though a 16+ event, all those under 18 are requires to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. VIP packages are also offered, and these include private tables, drinks, and dessert with some of the best views in the venue—ideal for all of the performances.

1920s New Year’s Eve at Vino By The Sea

Celebrate the Roaring ‘20s on the Wharf. Known for its wines and exceptional location, Vino By The Sea is hosting a 21+ NYE party. The theme is the 1920s, so guests are invited to bring all the glamor and fashion of the time period.

 

A ticket includes food and drinks, party favors, live music, and, of course, the countdown. As well, Vino By The Sea has some of the most beautiful views of the water in the entire city. More information can be found here

Boardwalk Bowls’ New Years Eve Party

For perhaps a more unconventional way to celebrate, Boardwalk Bowl (115 Cliff Street) is hosting their annual New Year’s Eve party. Partygoers can rent a lane for $184, which includes party favors, bowling shoe rentals, and a glass of champagne or cider.

 

Those interested should know that there is a limit to five people per lane. More information can be found here.

Getting Around Santa Cruz on New Year’s Eve

The Santa Cruz Metro will be running their regular weekday service on December 31st, 2024. This includes both the Amtrak Hwy 17 Express and METRO ParaCruz. However, the Santa Cruz Metro does not operate on New Year’s Day, with the exception of the Highway 17 route, which will be running on the weekend schedule.


Taxi services and ridesharing apps are a popular choice, as parking is not always available (or is limited) for some of the above events. Additionally, ridesharing providers also offer car rentals, for those who may require a vehicle for an extended period of time.
