Famous Figures Who Called Santa Cruz Home

Throughout history, the Santa Cruz and Monterey area has seen a fair share of high-profile residents and visitors. Perhaps it is the gorgeous landscapes or the relaxed, coastal culture (or a mixture of both) that seem to draw a lot of interest from creatives in particular: writers, filmmakers, artists, and more. As such, this beautiful part of Central California has been a source of artistic and cultural inspiration, and still remains a top spot to visit for famous individuals today.

Discover just a few of the prominent figures who made their mark in the Santa Cruz area.

Alfred Hitchcock

1899-1980

Often cited as one of the most influential figures in the history of cinema, Alfred Hitchcock was born and raised in England, but later moved back and forth between his birthplace and America. He had an impressively long career, during which he bought property in California—the Scotts Valley region, specifically. This prominent director and screenwriter shot and/or set several of his films in different cities around Santa Cruz/Monterey, the first of which was Suspicion in 1941—which would also help actor Cary Grant migrate over from screwball comedies to more serious roles.

Hitchcock is perhaps most well-known for his later thrillers, such as Psycho, Vertigo, and Rear Window, though his major focus throughout his career was to redefine mystery and suspense films. Scotts Valley recently hosted the Alfred Hitchcock Festival, honoring 100 years of his movies.

bell hooks

1952-2021

A graduate of the University of California Santa Cruz (with a Ph.D in English), bell hooks is famed for her writings and teachings on race, feminism, and class, and how these facets of society intersect. She grew up in Kentucky and began teaching at UCSC in the 1980s.

bell hooks’ most prominent work, which is considered a foundational feminist text, is All About Love: New Visions. It explores love as a force of societal change, the limits and constraints often put upon it, and how it connects to spiritual growth and healing. This is also a New York Times bestseller.

Adrienne Rich

1929–2012

Adrienne Rich was a feminist scholar, essayist, activist, and poet, whose works focused on language, sexuality, and intersectionality. Her breakthrough work was A Change of World and, later, Diving into the Wreck, both of which are award-winning poetry collections. Rich is often considered one of the most significant poets of the second half of the 20th century, alongside Maya Angelou, Audre Lorde, and many others.

She lived in Santa Cruz for many years before her death in 2012.

John Steinbeck

1902-1968

This Nobel Prize-winning American author was born and raised in Salinas. With a stripped-back style of writing, Steinbeck’s work showcases his love for (and societal critique of) Central California, especially in his most recognized titles, Of Mice And Men and The Grapes of Wrath. He likely spent an extended time in Monterey (which was also the setting for his novel Cannery Row), and may have been inspired by the Watsonville area for his novel, In Dubious Battle.

Steinbeck's sister, Esther Steinbeck Rodgers, also settled in the Santa Cruz area. Her home, colloquially known as The Rodgers House, is a still-standing attraction on the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Watsonville.

Jack O'Neill

1923-2017

A little bit of a local legend, Jack O'Neill was a businessman. He grew up partially in Southern California and spent a large part of his life in the San Francisco area. He is known for founding the brand O'Neill, a surfing supply company, and popularizing the neoprene wetsuit that has become staple gear for surfers

Though there is some debate about the actual inventor of the wetsuit itself, which The Guardian partially accredits to scientist Hugh Bradner, O’Neill certainly introduced it on a wide scale. There are currently two O’Neill locations in the Santa Cruz area: one in Capitola and another in Pleasure Point, with the third, downtown location closing in 2025 after 25 years.

Santa Cruz Day Trip: Sunset State Beach

Situated on the northern edge of Monterey Bay, Sunset State Beach is part of the city of Watsonville, California. It is most well-known as a camping destination, with a number of facilities offered, and, as its name suggests, it showcases gorgeous sunsets. As characteristic of the beaches in the bayfront region (such as the neighboring Manresa State Beach, to the north, and Palm Beach State Park, to the south), Sunset State Beach is considered a hidden gem—and much quieter and less crowded than similar-sized parks in the county.

Discover more about why Sunset State Beach makes for a great day trip for those located in the Santa Cruz area

Sunset State Beach: A Brief Overview

201 Sunset Beach Road, Watsonville, California

Sunset State Beach comprises roughly two miles of sandy beach, as well as campgrounds and other related facilities. Most notably, the park features picturesque sand dunes and mature pine trees, which guests navigate through to get to the various areas of the park. Unlike other popular state parks in Santa Cruz County, such as Wilder Ranch State Park and Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, Sunset State Beach is relatively tranquil and secluded, with very few events throughout the year. Because of this, it is generally regarded as more of a secret and a favorite of locals. The south end houses a resort, the Shorebirds Pajaro Dunes Resort, and much of the surrounding area is farmland.

This park is open daily and year-round, though park hours can change. Therefore, it is advisable to double-check ahead of time, as well as for any alerts or sudden closures. Sunset State Beach is about a 15-minute drive from Watsonville and a 30-minute drive from Santa Cruz. It is accessible via the highway, which connects to San Andreas Road.

Parking is available, both at the campsites and at two separate lots for beachgoers. Entrance fees are determined by vehicle type (and these prices do not include Seniors’ rates):

Car: $10

Small bus [10-24 people]: $50

Larger bus [25+ people]: $100

Park Amenities & Facilities

There are two types of visitors to Sunset State Beach: single-day and campers. Facilities, therefore, are a little bit more extensive than some other parks, and include (but are not limited to) the following:

Restrooms, drinking stations, and showers

Picnic benches and tables

Parking

Fire pits and grilling areas

Lifeguards

As Sunset State Beach is also a protected area, those who visit are asked to take measures to not disturb local wildlife or natural features. In particular, the western snowy plover makes its nests in the sand dunes along the beach, and moon jellyfish are often spotted in the water.

Additionally, no horses or drones are allowed at the park. However, there is a radio-controlled glider area closer to the south end. Fishing, windsurfing, geocaching, swimming, and surfing are permitted, but the park advises that only experienced surfers go out on the water because of the frequently rough currents and drop-offs.

Camping at Sunset State Beach

Perhaps the biggest draw of Sunset State Beach is camping. There are two campsites (north and south, respectively) which permit RVs—regulated to one vehicle per site. Entry fees are required for those who wish to camp at the park, separate from the day fees. Those who camp at the park love the scenery, the peace and quiet, and (of course) the beautiful beach.

The park also has certain rules for the number of guests permitted per site and any extra vehicles. The maximum length of stay for camping is seven days, and the park requires 48 hours of leave before returning. Further information about check-in/check-out times, fees and passes, quiet hours, fires and safety, and more can be found here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does Sunset State Beach accept visitors' passes?

A: Yes, Sunset State Beach accepts a number of different passes, including the California State Parks “California Explorer” Vehicle Day Use Annual Pass, the Golden Bear Pass, and the Distinguished Veteran Pass. For a full list of passes this park accepts, please visit the California government website.

Q: Is Sunset State Beach dog-friendly?

A: The rules for dogs are as follows: there are no dogs allowed on the beach, but dogs are allowed within the campground area, permitted that they are leashed at all times. This rule does not apply to service animals.

Q: Can I receive a refund if the weather is poor?

A: It is common for certain weather conditions (high winds and waves) in the autumn and winter season to cause the park to be closed. If this is the case, visitors can receive a refund or admission to another park nearby.

2026 Santa Cruz County Market Predictions

The real estate market in Santa Cruz is made up of a diverse range of properties, in terms of architectural style, category, and construction date. This, along with its incredible location and amenities, make it a sought-after place to settle down. That being said, being a competitive market and rising property prices have often made the homebuying process in Santa Cruz County more difficult, especially over the past few years

So what is in store for 2026 for buyers and sellers? While it is impossible to predict (with 100 accuracy) what the real estate market will look like in the near future, predictions can be made based on trends and the data available. Santa Cruz—and Santa Cruz County—is a market that's not easily definable, and it sees small ebbs and flows on a monthly basis. These metrics are in regards to available inventory, sale price, and days on the market.

But to answer this question simply: the year 2026 will (likely) see home prices continue to rise as Santa Cruz County remains a desirable area for many.

The Real Estate Market In Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz comprises single-family homes and multi-family properties, with a high rate of homeownership. Additionally, because of the university campus, the city has a significant student population.

The average sale price of a single-family home in Santa Cruz has risen from around $1,276,000 in 2020 to around $1,701,000 in 2024. Inventory and number of sold properties have also decreased. In October 2025, the average sales price was around $1,494,000.

The Real Estate Market In Santa Cruz Aptos

Aptos is a gorgeous community in Santa Cruz County, east of Santa Cruz. Made up of a number of villages, the Aptos real estate market showcases both oceanfront properties and semi-rural hillside properties.

The average sale price of a single-family home in Aptos has risen from around $1,388,000 in 2020 to around $1,800,000 in 2024. Just like Santa Cruz, inventory and number of sold properties have decreased over time. In October 2025, the average sales price was around $1,695,000.

The Real Estate Market In Capitola

One of the most recognizable communities in the area, Capitola is known for its colorful beachfront real estate and its outdoor recreation. It sees a significant tourist population annually from those also visiting Santa Cruz.

The average sale price of a single-family home in Capitola has risen from around $1,239,000 in 2020 to around $2,127,000 in 2024. Inventory, however, is low in this area by design and these metrics may now be entirely accurate due to this. In October 2025, the average sales price was around $1,504,000.

The Real Estate Market In Santa Cruz Watsonville/Corralitos

Considered to be a laid-back and more rural alternative to Santa Cruz, Watsonville and nearby Corralitos appeal to a wide demographic, from families to seniors. Watsonville is typically considered to be a more affordable option, though both communities have seen less significant increases in home price than the areas closer to Santa Cruz.

The average sale price of a single-family home in Watsonville has risen from around $783,000 in 2020 to $1,010,000 in 2024. Similarly, the average sale price of a single-family home in Corralitos has risen from around $1,588,000 in 2020 to $1,814,000 in 2024. In October 2025, the average sales price was $1,027,000 and $1,270,000 for Watsonville and Capitola, respecitvely.

Santa Cruz: What’s Next?

As single-family home prices (as well as other property prices) continue to rise—which will likely continue into the year 2026—some prospective homebuyers are choosing other, surrounding communities when searching for their next home. Or, choosing instead to downsize.

While this is an option, the city of Santa Cruz itself (as well as Santa Cruz County) is also overseeing some new developments, particularly focused on low-rise, multi-family homes. These include, but are not limited to, the following:

Park Haven Plaza (2838 Park Avenue, Soquel). Currently under construction, however the project has been delayed. The building will consist of 36 rental units.

RiverRow Apartments (414 Front Street). Currently under construction. This building is mixed use, and is planned to have 175 rental units, with 20 of these designated as affordable housing.

41st and Soquel (2755 41st Avenue, Soquel). Currently in development, this complex is designed for 256 rental units.

530 Front Street. Currently in development. Another apartment complex, it is planned to be made up of 276 rental units with designated units for low-income residents.

Trends in Santa Cruz Luxury Real Estate

Interior design trends come and go. While this is particularly true of modern times, where a fast-paced and online lifestyle has made it so what is “in” is constantly changing, luxury real estate tends to move a little bit slower.

There are what many would consider to be the “basics” of a luxury home: high-end appliances, upgraded kitchens, ample (often custom) storage solutions being just a few. Nevertheless, some emerging trends can be noted that stray away from these "basics", and for those looking for inspiration to refresh an old space, the following may be helpful when settling on what to go for.

Santa Cruz Luxury Real Estate, By The Numbers

As a brief overview of the Santa Cruz real estate market, the average sale price of a single-family home in Santa Cruz in 2024 was over $1,700,000. Comparatively, the average sale price for September 2025 was about $1,200,000—a slight decrease from last year (about 4) and a selling price lower than the yearly average. While interesting to note, the market does tend to slow down towards the end of the year, and so these figures can fluctuate.

So regardless of the numbers, or whether this tiny downward trend will continue, the facts are clear: Santa Cruz and much of Santa Cruz County is considered a luxury market overall. As such, luxury for Santa Cruz comprises the top, highest-priced properties, which can begin in the comfortable $2,500,000 range and work their way up to $10,000,000 and $15,000,000 homes.

Minimalism Over Maximalism

There has been some debate about whether the pendulum will swing back towards maximalism for a while now. As trends in fashion, design, and art tend to be both reactive and cyclical, minimalism fading out to give way for more bold designs would be a logical step forward. Additionally, “quiet luxury” was (some would say overly) discussed during the past couple of years, but this concept hadn’t ever really impacted the interior design for luxury homes because this has already been the trend for (arguably) the past two decades.

In short, a more minimalist design is often the preferred choice for interior design, and particularly when it comes to home staging in preparation for selling This style allows for a space to breathe and those to really take in the floor plan/architecture of the property, which is why it is so favored. Minimalism also aids in creating a space that is more calming, which many prefer, especially after a long day of work. As well, for those who might work from home, the more minimalist space helps keeps things organized. So for now, minimalism is still the way to go.

Clean & Simple Lines

Bouncing off of minimalism, furniture and pieces within luxury homes tend to have clean, simple, and even sometimes organic lines. Obviously, this depends on the owner’s personal style, so both curved and more geometric shapes are both utilized in these designs, but overall the impression is uncomplicated and very easy on the eyes.

Some versions of this trend, however, have short lives. Boucle, for example, had a moment but it appears to be on its way out again—especially in the curved couch and chair formats. For certain aesthetics or styles, this may be a more difficult trend to incorporate in a way that stays fresh over a multitude of years, and it can suit more modern and contemporary builds better.

For waterfront homes, large windows are a typical (and desirable) feature, as they serve to showcase the priceless views. A lot of homeowners want this to be the focal point of a property—as opposed to interior design that is very bold—and therefore simple and clean lines are a way to design around this.

Beach & Coastal Inspired

Pairing with the Santa Cruz landscape, a lot of luxury homeowners choose to match the interiors of their home to the world outside of it (and design usually changes depending on where the property is located). Coastal influences are not new, but this does appear to be a trend that is still going strong, and will likely continue on for years to come. It is quite popular with Santa Cruz’s waterfront properties, which is to be expected.

With a “beach inspired” theme typically comes either white or warmer woods (the latter of which is becoming increasingly popular, as it gives off a very homey and lived-in feel), some nautical pieces, and a more natural and personable approach to design. Instead of the greyscale kitchens, this can mean either some bright pops of color or a very warm color palette, one that evokes a very cozy feel. Wicker (which comes back every few years) is popular again, and wicker furniture definitely fits the coastal feeling that many are looking to evoke.

A Little Personality

But what sets luxury homes in Santa Cruz apart are the fun and sometimes quirky touches. In general, the area hasn’t ever been a big proponent of the “Millennial gray” aesthetic, but regardless, luxury homeowners tend to like the more unique look.

For many luxury buyers, hunting down a piece that is one-of-its -kind and/or tells a story (through its history, a vintage piece, or the way in which it was acquired) is thrilling, and is a talking point when people come over. From local art to custom furniture, incorporating pops of color or different textures is a way to break free from being just like everyone else. It’s less about what is trendy and more about having something distinctive.

While it can be difficult to predict which trends will look dated and which will stand the test of time, the best advice would be to pick something that speaks to you personally. Discover some of Santa Cruz's luxury real estate below.

Santa Cruz: Indoor And Outdoor Activities This Fall

Although autumn doesn’t officially start until September 21st, for many, the start of the month heralds in the season of pumpkin spice, trick-or-treating, and (hopefully) cooler weather. From day trips to farms outside of the city to the themed nights on the Boardwalk, the Santa Cruz area is packed with opportunities to experience the very best of the fall season.

Check out some of the indoor and outdoor activities (for all ages) that are running during the months of September, October, and November in and around Santa Cruz.

Outdoor Activities

Known for its gorgeous scenery—including the sprawling coast, the state parks to the north, and the farms just outside of the city—Santa Cruz offers year-around outdoor activities, with something out there for everyone.

Farms & Wine Walks

While the summer months offer fresh veggies and berries (including U-Pick), autumn at Santa Cruz farms switch gears with apple picking (earlier in the season) and pumpkin patches (typically in October). These family-friendly excursions help support local farmers and also make for a great day out.

Though there are a number of farms in the region, the following have apples and/or pumpkins specifically available to pick/purchase:

Rodoni Farm

Cal Poly Swanton Pacific Ranch (be sure to check their websites for updates)

Post Street Farm

Crystal Bay Farm

Gizdich Ranch

For adults, the eastern part of Santa Cruz County (Watsonville, Corralitos) is home to a fair share of vineyards and wineries. Many of these establishments have tastings and wine walks where guests can stroll through the property. Additionally, some have clubs where member fees provide certain perks and benefits. These are just a few options:

Windy Oaks Winery

Storrs Winery & Vineyards

Alfaro Family Vineyard-Winery

Anatum Winery

Halloween Events

The month of October sees a lot of spooky events—especially on the Boardwalk. In previous years, this area has hosted 13 Days of Halloween on the Wharf, an event with different nightly events. This year, they are organizing Boardwalk Halloween, which includes prizes for best costume, the Fright Walk, and other attractions for kids and adults alike. They also have a trick-or-treat package (candy and a collectable bag) available for purchase. More information about the event and tickets can be found here.

Various community Halloween events are also being hosted around the city, from neighborhood trick-or-treating to The Catalyst Club’s Costume Party.

Indoor Activities

For those that might not like the (sometimes fickle) weather that Santa Cruz has outside of the summer months, there are a number of indoor activities that can be enjoyed regardless of rain or shine.

Cine Insomnia at the Landmark Theater

A literal landmark in the Santa Cruz downtown, the Landmark Theater is a historic cinema that runs both new releases and older, classic films (both cult and otherwise). Cine Insomnia is the theater’s film series of late-night showings, which are scheduled for certain days from September to December.

But don’t fret—despite the scary season, these movies span a range of genres. Some of the films include Se7en (the 20th anniversary of crime classic), The Room, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and even famous international features such as House (Hausu) from Japan.
Back To School Shopping in Santa Cruz

Summer always feels like it’s going on forever—and then suddenly stores are advertising sales and it’s time for back to school. With the oncoming academic year quickly approaching (or already arrived in some cases), it may be a bit overwhelming to check everything off your shopping list.

The city of Santa Cruz has a number of stores and shops that stock the essentials, from backpacks to new clothes and everything in between. Get ready for the start of school with some things that new residents, students, and locals should know.

Shopping in the Downtown

Santa Cruz’s downtown spans Pacific Avenue, from Mission Street/Water Street in the north to Laurel Street in the south. With a range of retailers including international brands and local businesses, students returning to school can pick up the necessities—stationary, bags, clothing and accessories, and more, in style.

Downtown options include (but are not limited to) the following:

Old School Shoes* (bags, shoes, and accessories)

Free People (women and girls' clothing)

Gap * Gap Kids (clothing)

Lively Kids* (clothing and accessories)

Comicopolis* (graphic novels, comics, and books)

Atlantis Fantasyworld* (comics, figurines and merchandise)

Pacific Wave*

Urban Outfitters (preteen/adolescent clothing and accessories)

Sockshop & Shoe Company* (shoes, socks, and accessories)

Stores with a * indicate that they are small or local businesses, while names that are bolded offer student discounts. However, be aware that percentage off varies and also requires a student ID.

Additionally, there are a number of thrift stores in Santa Cruz, so for those looking to pick up something new-to-them for less, or for those searching for something unique, secondhand or vintage stores are a great alternative. And it’s environmentally friendly

Santa Cruz Sidewalk Sales

The downtown area, as well, also hosts Sidewalk Sales, with merchandise decorating the exteriors of stores and the sidewalk around them. Again, sales differ from retailer to retailer and not all stores downtown participate, but it is an excellent opportunity to pick up something brand new at a discount.

The next Downtown Santa Cruz Sidewalk Sale runs from August 29th to September 1st. More information can be found here.

The Essentials at Bookshop Santa Cruz

With titles for anxious students and parents, Bookshop Santa Cruz is a landmark in the downtown area, and offers a wide range of titles. For this school upcoming school year, browse from books required for certain classes, study guides and self-help, cheap and easy recipes for post-secondary students living alone, or even picture books that answer questions about going to school for the first time. Or, for those looking to break free of the textbooks and course readings, Bookshop Santa Cruz offers a wealth of titles to enjoy for fun.

For university students, Bookshop Santa Cruz also partners with UC Santa Cruz and stocks apparel, supplies, and required reading. It may have a title in stock that the Bay Tree Campus Store does not currently have (or one might prefer a physical store to ordering online). The Bay Tree Campus Store often has back to school discounts and special offers for students.

Upcoming Summer Events

Santa Cruz also has a few events coming up in the next few weeks to celebrate the end of summer.

National Roller Coaster Day [August 16th]

Beach Cleanup at Cowell Beach [run by Save Our Shores, August 16th]

Downtown Santa Cruz: Makers Market [August 17th]

Neighborhood block parties [run by Santa Cruz Neighbors, August 23rd and 24th]

Midtown Fridays Summer Block Party [August 29th]

Fall Campout at the Beach [fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, September 12th to 13th]

Santa Cruz Housing Prices By Neighborhood

The city of Santa Cruz is made up of a number of neighborhoods—from Seabright down by the waterfront to Westlake up in the hills, by the university campus—and each have their own unique characteristics.

Santa Cruz’s real estate market has seen a general increase in property value from last year, continuing in an upward trajectory. Both 2023 and 2024 saw an average sale price (for a single-family home) of roughly $1,700,000, though with a slight drop in 2024. Comparatively, the average sale price across Santa Cruz County as a whole increased from $1,303,533 to $1,359,649 (2023 to 2024, respectively).

In May 2025, the average sale price for a detached home in Santa Cruz proper was $1,784,986, a number which fluctuates slightly based on neighborhood. Below is a rough guide to home prices in some of the city’s most well-known areas.

Westlake

One of the most desirable neighborhoods in Santa Cruz, Westlake homes are positioned in the Upper West Side of the city, within winding streets on the hillside. Attractive particularly to growing families because of its close proximity to schools and the neighborhood’s central park, Westlake has a lot of curb appeal, with properties that overlook the city and the bay below.

Of course, these amenities and these views come at a higher price point. Properties in Westlake, which is made up of single-family homes, start at higher than average for the city.

Stats as of June 2025

Highest listed price: $4.1M

Lowest listed price: $1.4M

Westcliff

Another neighborhood in Santa Cruz, Westcliff is centered on West Cliff Drive, south of Bay Street and Delaware Avenue—and between Natural Bridges State Beach and Cowell Beach. These homes, particularly those in the west end of the neighborhood, are sought after for their ocean view location, with a number of properties having unobstructed views of the water.

Homes in this neighborhood are a mixture of older properties and new construction projects, which makes this one of the more diverse areas in terms of architectural style. Westcliff, which is on the coast, also has a sister neighborhood in Pleasure Point, along East Cliff Drive, with similar home features and amenities.

Stats as of June 2025

Highest listed price: $5.7M

Lowest listed price: $1.7M

The Circles

A small neighborhood just north of Westcliff, The Circles is recognizable on maps for its circular streets which used to curve around the Garfield Park Christian Church. The Circles is an established, residential neighborhood, and single-family homes in this area are typically priced a little bit lower than other areas of Santa Cruz—though properties (many of them older bungalows) are also smaller in square footage.

One of the biggest benefits for living in the circles, other than its family-friendly atmosphere, is its location. It’s just minutes away from the beach, the downtown, schools, and city parks.

Stats as of June 2025

Highest listed price: $1.4M

Lowest listed price: $975K

Downtown

The downtown area of Santa Cruz is vibrant, consisting of historic homes and new construction properties—which include detached houses and condos/townhomes. Incredibly walkable, the downtown is the city’s hub for shopping and dining, with an emphasis on local shops and businesses. The main stretch of Downtown Santa Cruz is centered on Pacific Avenue.

Properties, particularly single-family homes, are sought-after, mostly because of their historic charms and quirks. However, while many homes have been well-maintained over the years, houses for sale in the downtown might require some updates or upgrades.

Stats as of June 2025

Highest listed price: $2.9M

Lowest listed price: $1.4M

Beach Flats

Tucked away by the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is the neighborhood of Beach Flats. Aptly named, this neighborhood is just a short walk away from the Wharf, Cowell Beach, and even the downtown—though a car is recommended. Comprising both multi-family homes and single-family homes, Beach Flats is considered one of the more affordable areas to live in Santa Cruz.

Beach Flats properties are usually smaller in size, with many properties that have been rebuilt or converted to multi-family homes. Additionally, there are not usually a lot of active listings in the neighborhood.

Stats as of June 2025

Highest listed price: $1.5M

Lowest listed price: $1.4M

All statistics have been retrieved from the Santa Cruz MLS [MLSListings, Inc.] and from the Santa Cruz County Association of REALTORS®.

Types Of Homes In The Santa Cruz Area

For those starting their home search in Santa Cruz, the process can feel slightly overwhelming. With a real estate market that continues to climb in both price and demand, homebuyers should know what possibilities are out there and what the different neighborhoods across the city can offer.

Homes in Santa Cruz showcase, perhaps, a greater range of styles and designs than one might think—all centered around the city’s historic neighborhoods close to the downtown. Though there are condos and townhomes for sale in the city, the properties focused on below are limited to detached, single-family constructions.

The Classic Bungalow & Single-Family Home

Perhaps most emblematic of Santa Cruz is the coastal, Californian-style bungalow or multi-story home.

These properties have varied construction dates, with a significant portion of these homes having been built during two distinct periods: the early-1900s and again around the 1950s. Of course, with this range comes differing architecture and features from property to property. The former exhibits the traditional cottage and Craftsman style, while the latter leans a little bit more towards the classic ranch design. Mediterranean is also a popular architectural style for Santa Cruz’s single-family homes.

Homes built between 1900 and 1920 are not frequently found for sale on the market. Typically, these properties are located close to the downtown (or just across the river) as these are the oldest neighborhoods in the city. In contrast, there is much more selection for homes between 1940 and 1955. Though well-maintained by owners, some buyers do find that updates and renovations are necessary.

Historic Properties

A subset of their own, historic properties in Santa Cruz are quite desirable for their unique charm and excellent locations close to the city’s top amenities: the city center, the beach, shopping, restaurants, etc. Santa Cruz has a few historic neighborhoods, which include the Downtown, Mission Hill, and parts of the Lower West Side.

Walnut Avenue in particular (found within the Downtown Historic District) is known for its preserved Victorian and Queen Anne historic homes—beloved for their opulent exteriors and (often) bright colors. If that isn’t to your taste, this area does feature a range of styles, including Italianate and Gothic Revival, as well.

Modern & Contemporary

A little less of a popular choice, modern and contemporary homes are (very obviously) newer constructions, and are also a bit limited on the real estate market. Santa Cruz homebuyers sometimes purchase older properties with the intention of building a new custom home on the lot, which is why this type of home can be difficult to pin down to one distinct style or time period. Often, custom homes will incorporate elements of the other homes in the neighborhood.

There aren’t too many new construction builds in the city of Santa Cruz proper. Most are located in the communities to the east where lot sizes tend to be on the larger size. However, Lower West Side, West Cliff, and other luxury neighborhoods close to the water are where most of the contemporary homes are located.

Mediterranean

Another less popular home style, Mediterranean designs are found all across the city, but particularly in the hilly neighborhoods to the north and northeast. These properties tend to be larger, multi-story constructions, though bungalows do exist in this architectural style.

These home type also includes some historic properties, located in the neighborhoods closer to the downtown and the beach—however these are typically on the smaller side, at least in comparison to the luxury homes outside of the city center.

What's New In Santa Cruz For The Summer

Want to make the most of the summer in Santa Cruz? From catching sun on the beach to seeing a new release at the Landmark Del Mar Theatre (or a surprise movie at the Secret Film Festival), there’s always something to see and do. Here are some updates—as well as some activities to consider—for the summer season here in the city

Vertigo 360, A New Ride At The Boardwalk

Following the construction of the Ferris Wheel (the Dream Wheel) and the new spin ride, Surge, in 2024, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk will welcome yet another new addition to the amusement park. Described as a thrill ride that swings seated guests around on a pendulum, “Vertigo 360” is set to be completed around spring of next year.

The park already houses several thrill rides, including the popular Pirate Ship, Giant Dipper (the historic roller coaster), and Logger’s Revenge (a flume ride). However, there are still plenty of fun alternatives at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk for those who might want something slightly less intense this summer

Camping at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park

A gem of the Santa Cruz area, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park is a popular destination for walking/hiking, fishing, and camping. This year, however, the park has been undergoing construction and delays have meant that camping will not be available at the park until August.

Further updates about the park can be found here.

Movies On The Beach

Back for another year, Movies on the Beach has released their summer schedule. Happening Friday nights from June to August at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, this free event always draws a crowd. Guests are invited to bring a blanket or a low-backed chair for movie-viewing, and snacks and refreshments can be purchased on-site.

This year, the summer lineup includes Clueless, Ghostbusters, The Goonies, and, of course, The Lost Boys—which kicks off the event on June 13th. Rumors of a remake of the classic 1987 film have been circling around, but the Warner Bros. production seems to have halted for the moment. Regardless, perhaps a remake could be filmed at the same location(s) as the original, right in Santa Cruz

The entire movie schedule can be found here.

Saturdays at the Museum of Natural History

The Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History, located at 1305 East Cliff Drive, has events all throughout the year, including guided walking tours, after-school activities for kids, and scavenger hunts. Their Saturday programs are themed and always bring something exciting and new, though they also have their permanent event called Saturdays In The Soil, where participants can garden together. Past events have included oil painting classes, special exhibitions, and more.

Additionally, the museum is also hosting a beach clean up event for World Oceans Day on June 8th, and sign-ups can be found here. More information, including other and future events, can be found on their website.

M.K Contemporary Art Gallery Exhibitions

Formerly Curated [By The Sea], the M.K. Contemporary Art gallery is located in downtown Santa Cruz and showcases works by local artists. From now until June 29th, the gallery is currently featuring their latest exhibition, Here to Eternity, which is in partnership with Santa Cruz Pride.

Past exhibitions have included “Divergent Visions” (on alternative photography), “Feasting on the World” (beauty and chaos), and “Ten” (which featured the works of ten of Santa Cruz’s most well-known artists). These can also be viewed in the online archives.

Their website can be found here.
