As the seasons begin to change (and the weather cools down a little bit!), you might find yourself longing for a bit of a change. Clearing out some of the clutter or moving things around can be a great way to refresh your space—but what if you want a more dramatic change?

Updating your bedroom is sometimes considered low-priority, however there are still some quick, easy, and budget-friendly ways to change the look of this space. Whether you’re thinking of moving within the Santa Cruz area and giving your bedroom an upgrade before listing, or if you just want to switch things up a bit, here are five simple tips and tricks to achieve a fun new look!

White and brown blankets and pillows

Pillowcases and Throw Blankets

Changing the entirety of your bedding can become expensive very quickly. Our solution? Swapping out your pillowcases and throw blankets instead.

New pillowcases are a more inexpensive alternative to purchasing entirely new pillows, and allow you to change designs whenever you wish. Plus, pillows and blankets allow you some freedom to play with colors and textures, which really add some interest to your space.

If you don’t already cycle between different color schemes between seasons, consider doing so! Switching between lighter colors in the spring and summer and darker colors in the fall and winter can keep you from feeling too bored with your bedroom decor!

White modern bedroom with green and yellow plants

Plants

Green in and of itself has become quite a popular color, in both fashion and interior design. Adding plants into your space can really liven up the room—and these can be real or fake (for those of us who unfortunately do not have a green thumb)!

If you’re worried about color schemes, there are many ways to tackle this. Investing in plant pots or vases that match the theme of your room will help you easily integrate this new piece into your space. But consider that “plants” can mean anything from tall ferns to grasses, winding sticks to roses—so have fun with different types and colors!

String lights in bedroom with mirror and accent pieces

Accent Pieces

Never underestimate the power of a great accent piece. A new vase on a night table or mirror on top of your dresser can really transform your space.

The purpose of an accent piece is to both draw attention and to make the space feel complete. So while this can be a great way to incorporate textures and shapes, you’ll want to stick to the color scheme you’ve chosen for your bedroom. Otherwise, you’ll likely find that something doesn’t quite match.

Of course, another part of the appeal of this can be the “thrill” of the hunt. For those into interior decorating, searching for and eventually finding the perfect piece can be quite exciting—and a conversation-starter!

Dark modern bedroom with wicker light fixture

Light Fixtures

This is more of an expensive upgrade, but one that will really make a difference! Changing out your light fixtures can completely change the look of your bedroom.

From opulent chandeliers to simple, stylish geometric designs, replacing standard fixtures with more elaborate ones can make a room look and feel much more extravagant. And lights means more than just large ceiling lights—small bedside table lamps or free-standing fixtures are pieces that’ll elevate your style.

Pink modern bedroom with dark floral wallpaper accent wall

Wallpaper And Paint

While this is a bit of a daunting task, this makes the biggest difference!

Important to note is this: you do not have to wallpaper or paint your entire bedroom. Accent walls are a popular design choice that really transform your space. If you find that your bedroom is feeling dull and unexciting, a wallpapered accent wall might be the thing that brings your room together. Or, a wall in a new, complementary paint color.

What color do I go with? That all depends on your room and your personal style. In regards to wallpaper, consider a simple print with like colors, or even a textured paper in the same color as your painted walls. For paints, a monochromatic look (one wall slightly lighter or darker) is not as dramatic, but is still effective.
